At first glance, Jesper Lindgren’s depictions seem familiar, almost graspable. Yet the longer the gaze lingers, the more logic begins to slip away, replaced by a quiet bewilderment. Is this a Venetian palace, an abandoned house in Croydon, or a brutalist concrete giant bearing Le Corbusier’s hand? On closer inspection, the architecture reveals itself to be neither nor – but rather an illusion. What once felt known becomes unrecognizable, transfigured into something uncanny, a presence steeped in unease, to borrow Freud’s words. The sense of anxiety deepens in the absence of life; not a trace of it remains. What is visible carries as much weight as what is withheld. To approach Lindgren’s work, one must summon a vivid imagination. Who is it that hides behind the drawn blinds? How do they live, what do they do, who are they?

The forms and desolate silence in Lindgren’s visual language evoke post-apocalyptic scenes, while he simultaneously refuses to let history die — the houses remain as stubborn guardians of memory. In the monumental work Läggor (2025), a solitary, isolated structure appears like a fragment of memory from a time that has passed, something that will never return; an architectural illusion in which structure and emptiness interact in a quiet indeterminacy. In the sculpture Viadukt (2025), the warning becomes explicit: its black-and-yellow signs suggest danger, a signal that something has been lost or that something still threatens. The work carries a sense of time being in the process of erasing the past — yet also a sense of resistance, a refusal to accept oblivion. Lindgren creates spaces for remembrance and imagination; they function both as testimonies and warnings, evoking a feeling of lost time while simultaneously resisting the disappearance of the past into darkness.

The ghostly announces itself as an overwhelming sensation. And yet, the more time one spends with Lindgren’s work, the more a fragile hope emerges. Despite the unease it conjures, the aesthetic is deeply seductive, even irresistible. It clings to the mind, and imagination carries on long after the gaze has slipped away from the gallery space.
